A Bosendorfer 225 semi concert grand in a black french polished case
This piano is best introduced by the son of the former owner - "This is a rather special piano for our family in that it belonged to my father who was a concert pianist, Walter Klien who had a very long standing artiste association with Bosendorfer and was a winner of the Bosendorfer Piano Competition in 1953.
My late mother, Erica Klien has been using this piano for teaching in the UK - it has been in our family for over 60 years. My sister was left the piano by my father and now that we are selling my mother’s home just outside of London, we need to sell the piano too."
Klien studied with Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. He recorded a substantial discography with over 130 releases, including the complete solo piano works of Mozart, the majority of the works of Brahms and Schubert, and many recordings of works for two pianos and four hands with long term collaborator Alfred Brendel
This piano has been well maintained over the years and restrung and refurbished at some point. It has an exceptionally good tone and an excellent action, which has been re-weighed to modern standards giving a huge improvement (Bosendorfer grand pianos of this era originally had very light actions)
We were recently contacted by someone who knew the previous owner very well, who also informed us that it was played many times by Martha Argerich when visiting London due to a long standing friendship between Argerich and the former owner. This is just anecdotal but certainly a nice bit of history and one which we have no reason to doubt
The black french polished casework was repolished at some point in the past, and has some areas of wear and tear but is overall quite attractive
A superb instrument with a very interesting history, which will satisfy even the most demanding pianists. This piano has an incredible tonal character which is quite possibly one of the finest instruments we have ever played - and for a 103 year instrument it is truly extraordinary
